Obi Plans to Leave Labour Party; I Won’t Join Him – Otti

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has clarified that he has no intention of leaving the Labour Party, despite rumours linking him with a possible defection alongside the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Speaking during his monthly media briefing in Umuahia on Tuesday, Otti revealed that Obi personally informed him of his decision to exit the party. He added that he gave his blessings to Obi’s move, but maintained that he would not be joining him in leaving the Labour Party.

“If you remember, I joined the Labour Party before Peter Obi, so I did not join the party with him,” Otti said.
“He has communicated to me that he is leaving the Labour Party, and I gave him my blessings. But I will remain in the Labour Party and continue the struggle to reposition it. If at the end we are unable to fix it, then we can discuss other options. For now, I am not defecting to any party.”

Otti, however, did not disclose the political party Peter Obi is heading to, although speculation continues to swirl that he may formally declare for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which the opposition coalition adopted for the 2027 elections.

The governor also reacted to comments from Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, who had urged him to join the All Progressives Congress (APC). Otti noted that he would not be distracted by such calls, stressing his commitment to governance and service delivery.

Quoting Winston Churchill, he said:

“You will never get to your destination if you stop to throw stones at every dog that barks. We will remain focused on our job.”

Otti further appreciated Kalu for responding to his Christmas message by supporting the vulnerable in the state, noting that such gestures align with the spirit of kindness and compassion he preached during the festive season.
