Gospel stars Joyous Celebration to close the year with a bang

Joyous Celebration is one of South Africa’s biggest gospel groups and they have over 15 awards to their name. The electric gospel group is set to end the year with the second installment of the MTN Joyous Celebration Restoration Imvuselelo on 18 December and they are going big!

Joyous Celebration was founded by Dr Lindelani Mkhize, Jabu Hlongwane and Mthunzo Namba in 1996. Since then, the powerhouse group has delivered impactful gospel music with every album. To date, the group has released over 20 albums.

The award-winning gospel giants celebrated their 25th anniversary earlier this year with an album titled Still We Rise. Speaking about their 25th anniversary, one of the group’s singers and ambassadors, Sylvester Funani said the group is ecstatic.

“25 years is no child’s play. It requires hard work, longevity and consistency,” he told Sowetan

“In Joyous 25, [Still We Rise] we are saying it has been 25 years of gospel ministry and still we rise. But it’s twofold. The rising is not only for us as a foundation. It’s also for our people. It’s also for SA and the world.”

“Amidst the pandemic that we’re trying to recover from, still we rise. Life must continue.”

The gospel giants will be closing 2021 with the MTN Joyous Celebration Restoration Imvuselelo concert on 18 December.

Speaking to IOL, founding member Jabu Hlongwane said the COVID-19 pandemic has been a cathartic experience and journey.

“Although we are far from being free from the pandemic, we are excited at the opportunities we have been able to tap into owing to this calamity.”

The first MTN Joyous Celebration Restoration Imvuselelo concert was held in Durban in December 2020. The second edition of the concert will be a hybrid production with a live audience of 750 people.
